Top 10 Paul Rudd Films

paul-rudd-they-came-together-funniest-movies-vomit-laughterSo it appears I have “man crush” on Paul Rudd. I am okay with this. I understand he’s not a critically acclaimed actor but there’s something about him, other than his looks and lack of ageing, that appeals to me. I think it’s his use of sarcastic comedic device and how he doesn’t take himself too seriously. He also knows how to play the clown and just seems like an obvious choice, for me, to the old “which celebrity would you invite over to dinner?” question.

So let’s do it to it.

Here are my favourite top 10 Paul Rudd movies:

(1) I Love You, Man (2009)

Rudd’s awkwardness really shines in this movie as the insecure and socially inept Peter Klaven. His babbling, ad-lib ‘Klavenisms’ have now become a part of his comedic repertoire.

(2) Role Models (2008)

One of his bigger box office comedies, Rudd plays a depressed thirty-something with no life goals. Wonderfully offset by Seann William Scott, this movie shows him at his cynical best.

(3) Wanderlust (2012)

Paul plays another miserable, sarcastic character in this movie but I love it. A strong comedic cast carries this one.

(4) Wet Hot American Summer (2001)

One of his first comedic roles in this summer camp spoof directed by my favourite comedy director David Wain. This would be their first of five director-actor collaborations.

(5) They Came Together (2014)

Absolutely absurd spoof of romantic comedies. I love it. Has many great typical Rudd moments as well as a couple of WTF moments including ‘that’ scene with his Bubby (grandma). Although panned by critics it has a lot of rewatch value in my eyes.

(6) Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008)

Although only a cameo, Rudd packs it all into his limited screen time as a hilarious stoner surfer.

(7) This Is 40 (2012)

In this quasi-sequel to the 2007 hit Knocked Up, Rudd and Leslie Mann mix comedy and drama in this coming of (middle) age film.

(8) Our Idiot Brother (2011)

Another movie that borders more on the drama side of a comedy-drama. Paul Rudd plays a lovable fool who does time for selling weed to a fully uniformed police officer. Playing an adult that is a kid at heart, he has to try to survive life outside of prison with his three strait-laced sisters.

(9) The Fundamentals of Caring (2016)

This one took me by surprise. I would only have watched it for its Ruddness. Another drama that showcases Paul’s acting ability, he plays a care worker with a damaged past who has been hired to look after wheelchair-bound Trevor. Obviously there are quite a few funny moments but otherwise an enjoyable, heartwarming film.

(10) Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004)

This movie is obviously led by Will Ferrell but Rudd as Brian Fantana is an extremely important part that seemed tailor-made for him.

Notable exclusions:

(omitted not because of the movie but because of Rudd not getting to showcase his talents enough…..or I haven’t seen it yet….)

Romeo + Juliet (1996), The Cider House Rules (1999), The 40 Year Old Virgin (2005), The Ten (2007), Knocked Up (2007), Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story (2007), Year One (2009), Dinner for Schmucks (2010), Ant-Man (2015).
